Our Texas summer has been HOT – very unlike the year-round springlike weather we had in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. We drove to Southern California in mid-July thinking we would escape the heat, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. But the visits we had with dear friends and family more than made up for the heat. Our purpose in spending several weeks away was to catch up with long-time financial and prayer partners, our home church (Fullerton Free), and also to spend time with a few family members who live in that area. Thankfully we were able to meet individually with about 50 people and also share about our lives and work in several large groups. We are so grateful to everyone who took the time to meet with us. It was an encouragement! There is no way we can include a photo of every person we saw, but here are a few. For those of you reading by email, click on the photos if you want to see them larger.

Hospitality Job

I mentioned in another update that I started volunteering in our organization’s “Boutique” (a free thrift store for missionaries) a few months ago. I’ve continued with that about 2 or 3 times a month, helping to put new donations on shelves and keep things tidy. A couple months ago I was asked by Seed Company if I would like to join the Hospitality team. I felt like I had the time, so one or two days a week I’ve been going in and helping. I resupply drinks and snacks, clean offices, and do set up and clean-up of meals for different team meetings. I’ve also been asked to bake treats for special events. I’m enjoying the job and they seem happy to have more help! Thank you all for praying for God’s leading in a ministry opportunity. I’m thankful I can play a small part in Bible Translation.

UPCOMING:

John will be heading to the Solomon Islands again – the capital, Honiara, to be exact. He will be doing a check of Numbers and Joshua for the Seqa language translation and he is busy doing the preparation for that check right now.  During the check he will also be mentoring a Wycliffe translator, Scott Baillie, who is working toward becoming a consultant. John leaves September 3^rd and returns September 19^th.

THANK GOD:

• that we were able to see so many people during our time in CA and that God kept us safe on the road.
• that I’ve been able to help out at the Seed Company.

PRAY:

• for John’s upcoming trip to the Solomons Sept 3 – 19. Pray for safe travel and good health and that he will be able to help the Seqa team in areas they are needing to grow.
• for the Zabana head translator, Isaac Matezama, that the vision in his left eye will continue to improve after surgery. Isaac is back in Solomon Islands and John will be able to see him on his September trip.
• that John will be able to find out what is happening with plans for the Bughotu Old Testament translation, as he has not heard if the translators were able to meet with the community to organize their support.
